images (1)The French word terroir traditionally translates as “that sense of place” which expresses the characteristics the local environment has on a product.  Music, dancing and bon temps – that’s the terroir of Bayou Teche Brewery in Arnaudville, Louisiana.

So it was with great anticipation and a weekday thirst that we headed off to check out their brewpub.

Because this is Cajun Country, we expected to find an unpretentious, laid back sort of place, and we were right. It was in a pole barn in someone’s front yard, with a fire pit out front and a dog wandering around.

The names of the beers were in French, and the labels – which are all works of art in themselves – have that quirky, colorful vibe that typifies Cajun Louisiana.

Microbreweries all have one thing in common – they are born out of a passion for producing good beer with unique flavors and local characteristics – terroir.

But anyone who starts out commercially brewing beer in a railroad box car deserves special props in the passion department.

This brewery started out small. Real small.

Their first commercial beer was brewed in a little white box car that still sits in the yard. They couldn’t make much at a time, but it quickly became a local favorite.

To keep up with the demand, they contracted with a Mississippi brewer for a couple years until they could build a larger facility of their own.

Saturday is a day for music and dancing in Louisiana, so we weren’t surprised to find they host a dance party every Saturday afternoon.

Either a food truck stops by or one of the employees cooks to make sure the second Louisiana trinity –  beer, music and food –  as well as the first Louisiana trinity – onion, bell pepper and celery – are both in the house every Saturday.

The indoors pub is very small, and with good reason. EVERYONE wants to sit outside with the music.
