March and April, 2011 – North Carolina’s Outer Banks – Kitty Hawk

Posted on December 2, 2011

The Outer Banks of North Carolina consists of Roanoke Island then a thin spit of sand, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, on which Nag’s Head, Kill Devil Hill, Cape Hatteras and other fancy communities are located.  Far to the south, Rodanthe and Waves are simple fishing villages, and probably more to our liking – but we didn’t get there.

Kill Devil Hill is the home of Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers experimented first with gliders, then with their famous flying machine.

They took off by running down the hill until enough updraft was achieved to lift their feather-weight craft off the ground.

The museum at Kitty Hawk wasn’t all that great, but we must remember that Henry Ford scooped up all the Wright Brothers good stuff, including their Dayton, Ohio bicycle shop,  for display in his Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.

That’s o.k. – it’s still a historic site and that’s what we were looking for.
